Premium Intraocular Lenses

Because Fisher-Swale-Nicholson-Nicholson Eye Center cares tremendously about the visual outcomes for our patients we now offer the latest technology in accommodating and multifocal lens implants. These lens types are also often referred to as Premium IOLs. Fisher-Swale-Nicholson-Nicholson Eye Center is one of the first distinguished eye centers in Kankakee, Illinois currently utilizing this exciting new technology.

Intraocular lenses, or IOLs, are the artificial lenses that replace the eye's natural lens that is removed during cataract or clear lens extraction (CLE) surgery. Traditional IOLs are monofocal, meaning they offer vision at one distance only. Traditional IOLs mean that you must wear eyeglasses or contact lenses in order to read, use a computer, or view objects in the middle distance, especially if you are already experiencing presbyopia before cataract surgery.

The new premium IOLs offer the possibility of seeing well at more than one distance, without glasses or contacts. Multifocal and accommodating lens implants correct both your distance vision and your near vision after cataract and (CLE) surgery. So, patients choosing to have a premium lens implant will likely find that they can drive, watch television, read or do crafts without glasses. They will also typically experience a greater overall freedom allowing them to participate in most everyday activities.

Each of these advanced technology implantable lenses uses a slightly different optical design to help you achieve your goal of clear vision at all distances. Our surgeons and our staff will discuss their recommendation based on many factors in your consultation. Precise measurements will also be taken to insure the correct lens power is selected for your eye. Here are examples of what we offer.

Crystalens®

The Crystalens is an accommodating intraocular lens used after cataract surgery or as a lens alternative in clear lens extraction. The concept of the lens was engineered with a hinge design to allow the optic, or part of the lens that you see through, to move back and forth on objects near, far, and all distances in-between seamlessly. The Crystalens is permanently implanted with a surgical process and functions in a similar fashion as the natural lens. Once the surgery has been completed your eyes can focus on far or near objects with no discomfort.

After your surgery and the placement of Crystalens, you will "relearn" how to focus your vision with your doctor's help and instruction. After a brief time of adaptation, it is expected that you will be able to perform most tasks without dependence on glasses. For additional information, please visit www.crystalens.com.

ReSTOR ®

The AcrySof® ReSTOR® lens is a breakthrough multifocal lens that uses apodized diffractive technology (similar to technology used in telescopes and microscopes) to give patients a full range of vision - near through distance - and to reduce dependency on reading glasses or bifocals following cataract and CLE surgery. This means that many patients can read the text on items such as prescription bottles, magazines, newspapers and computer screens, while also providing the ability to see items at a distance free from glasses or bifocals.

In fact, clinical trials have demonstrated that four out of five patients never needed to wear reading glasses or bifocals after having cataract surgery with the ReSTOR lens in both eyes. The ReSTOR lens now also filters both UV and blue light. For more information, please visit www.acrysofrestor.com.

Helping You Choose the Best Lens

During your consultation, examination, and cataract surgery scheduling our staff will spend the time necessary to review what typical daily routine activities are most important to you and whether being independent of glasses for those activities is something that you would like to achieve.   As you prepare for your visit to our office, you may want to begin thinking about what those activities are so you can discuss them with our staff.

In addition, if you decide to have a premium lens implant, our staff will take the time necessary to fully explain any additional fees related to the premium lens implant that you might be responsible for. Medicare and most insurances cover the surgeon’s and surgical facility fees for cataract surgery, but not the cost of the premium lens and additional professional fees. In most cases, the additional cost of the premium lens is the responsibility of the patient. Our staff will be able to review the cost as well as payment options.

It's important to note that you can't be 100 percent certain of seeing your best without eyeglasses or contact lenses after cataract surgery, even if your eyes have received premium IOLs. Some factors that may decrease satisfaction with these IOLs are incorrect positioning of the IOLs in the eye and nighttime halos. Another factor can also include pre-existing astigmatism. If you have left over astigmatism, a procedure known as limbal relaxing incisions (LRI) may also be required.

But even with risks, premium IOLs do provide the probability of an expanded range of vision without total dependence on eyeglasses or contacts. Please discuss these options directly with our eye doctors at Fisher-Swale-Nicholson-Nicholson Eye Center. We will present the option that best fits your visual needs. To schedule a premium lens implant evaluation please fill out our online contact us form or call our office at 815-932-2020.
